Call for Applications: Trainee Video Journalists
The Role
Joburg Speaks is a bold new video journalism initiative by the Henry Nxumalo Foundation (HNF) in partnership with Enhancing Accountability TAF, working alongside the Johannesburg Pop-Up Newsroom. This newsroom will expose broken governance, highlight municipal neglect, and showcase what citizens are doing to address these challenges.
As a Trainee Video Journalist, you will work at the intersection of storytelling, community engagement, and civic accountability. Using mobile devices, you will capture and produce short, impactful videos that reflect the lived experiences of Joburg’s residents – from the city’s best moments to its most urgent challenges. Your work will be distributed via social media, civic networks, and partner newsrooms to inspire dialogue and change.
Key Responsibilities

Capture compelling short-form videos using mobile devices.

Interview residents and document their lived experiences.

Work with the editorial team to curate and publish content.

Collaborate with community members, civic groups, and newsroom staff.

Adhere to ethical journalism standards and responsible storytelling practices.
Requirements

Passion for journalism, storytelling, and community engagement.

Basic knowledge of video shooting and editing (mobile or DSLR).

Familiarity with social media platforms for content distribution.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Prior community or media experience is advantageous but not essential.
