The Role
The HSRC is seeking to appoint a dynamic, experienced, and highly motivated Senior Research Specialist or Research Manager to provide leadership in the conceptualisation, execution, and management of complex research projects aligned with the organisation’s strategic priorities.
As a key member of the research team, you will:

Lead the development and implementation of high-quality, policy-relevant research

Drive innovation in methodology, stakeholder engagement, and impact-focused dissemination

Manage multi-disciplinary research teams and collaborate across units
-
Ensure adherence to ethical research standards and project milestones

Mentor junior researchers and contribute to HSRC’s capacity-building initiatives
-
Engage with government, academia, civil society, and international development partners
-
Produce publications, reports, and policy briefs that influence social development
Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

✅ Doctoral Degree (PhD) in the Social Sciences or related field (e.g. Sociology, Public Policy, Development Studies, Political Science, or equivalent)

✅ At least 5–8 years’ post-doctoral experience in a research environment

✅ Proven ability to conceptualise, lead, and manage complex research projects

✅ Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and policy-relevant outputs

✅ Demonstrated experience in team leadership, stakeholder engagement, and fundraising

✅ In-depth understanding of South Africa’s developmental context and research needs

✅ Strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills

✅ Excellent communication, project management, and writing abilities

✅ Ability to mentor and supervise postgraduate students and junior researchers
