The Role
The Comrades Marathon Association is seeking a seasoned Race Director to oversee the planning, coordination, and delivery of the world-renowned Comrades Marathon. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for ensuring the successful execution of all race-day and pre-race operations while upholding the prestige and legacy of the event.
As Race Director, you will:

Lead cross-functional teams to deliver a world-class ultramarathon event

Ensure compliance with all regulatory, safety, and operational standards

Develop and implement innovative race strategies to enhance participant and spectator experience

Collaborate with key stakeholders including sponsors, municipalities, service providers, media, and volunteers

Manage operational budgets, logistics, timelines, and race infrastructure
-
Drive continuous improvement and excellence in race delivery
Requirements
To be considered for the position of Race Director, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

✅ A relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management, Event Management, Business Administration, or a related field

✅ Minimum of 8–10 years of proven experience in managing large-scale sporting events, preferably endurance races

✅ Demonstrated leadership and project management skills in high-pressure environments

✅ Strong knowledge of event logistics, risk management, safety protocols, and stakeholder engagement
-
✅ Excellent communication, negotiation, and crisis management abilities
-
✅ Ability to work long hours including weekends and public holidays during the event cycle

✅ A deep appreciation for the heritage and values of the Comrades Marathon is an advantage

✅ Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required
