Courses with No Maths Required in South Africa (Low Score Entry)

1. Bachelor of Arts (BA) – UNISA, UNIZULU, NWU, UFH, UL

  • Why it’s great: Focuses on humanities—history, languages, sociology, etc.

  • Entry: NSC Bachelor’s pass; APS ~20–25. No Maths required.

  • Where:

    • UNISA offers a general BA, BA in Communication Science, Social Work, Environmental Management 

    • UNIZULU’s BA includes Tourism, Anthropology, Social Work 

    • NWU, UFH, and UL also have BAs in humanities and Social Work 


2. BA Programmes – University of Johannesburg (UJ)

  • Courses: BA (Sociology, Anthropology, History, Philosophy), Journalism, Communication, Psychology, Public Management, Social Work 

  • Entry: APS ~23–27; English ≥60%. Maths not required (or Math Lit accepted) 


3. Humanities & Social Sciences – University of Zululand (UNIZULU)

  • Courses: Language, Tourism, Correctional Studies, Psychology, Media, Social Work, Education

  • Entry: NSC pass; subjects like History, English required; no Maths needed 


4. Humanities & Law – University of Pretoria (UP)

  • Courses without Maths: BEd (Foundation/Senior), BA, Social Work, BA Law, LLB, Fine Arts, Drama, Music 

  • Entry: NSC Bachelor’s pass; English ≥50%; APS ~26–34 depending on course 


5. Creative Diplomas – Tshwane University of Technology (TUT)

  • Courses: Diploma in Commercial Photography, Fashion Design, Fine & Applied Arts, Interior Design, Jewellery Design, Motion Picture Production, Performing Arts, Music, Journalism, Legal Support 

  • Entry: APS ~17–24; English ~30–50%; no Maths required 


6. UKZN – Humanities & Environmental Sciences

  • Courses: BA (General), BA in Geography & Environmental Management, Social Science in Housing ﹘ no Maths needed 


7. Low-APS Diplomas – e.g., TUT Office Admin

  • Example: Diploma in Office Administration at TUT – APS ~18–20, no Maths; leads to admin roles 


 Extras & Entry Tips

  • Accounting Path: With ≥60% in Math Lit, you may enter Unisa’s BCom Accounting straight, bypassing maths courses 

  • Bridging Courses: If you lack Maths, consider Higher Certificates (e.g., IT, Public Management) then move into degrees
